Our Story
A mission to brighten your day

The Steam Engine opened in 2014, when Roland Davies and Sam Werrett took on twenty-three square metres on the concourse of Chatswood Interchange and decided a train station deserved better coffee. The name was sitting right there on the platforms.
These days Sam owns it and Bailey runs it. The beans come from Headlands, roasted into the Vapor Blend, a house espresso built to love milk and survive a 7:42 express crowd. Hundreds of coffees go over the bar every day, most of them to people we know by name and order.
Every day is a chance to make someone's day. We take that on, one coffee at a time.
The music is not an afterthought. House playlists run all day, DJs take the bar some mornings, and the best of it gets pressed into the numbered Steamy Tapes. In 2023 the BBP Awards gave us a nod, which was nice, but the regulars deciding to miss a train for a second coffee is the award we count.
